Picture this, you booked your favorite photographer for a photoshoot at a beautiful tulip field and you’re so excited and…now what?

I wanted to write this Tulip Photoshoot Ideas blog post to give you ideas on not only things that you can do during your session, but ways you can enjoy your images long after your session.

I always encourage my clients to think past the social media post. What stories do you want your photos to tell?

How are you going to display the images? Are you just gonna post to social media?

Will they live on social media, or will you print them in an album to pass down for generations? Maybe you'll frame them, turning your home into a daily reminder of that special day.

Why Book a Tulip Photoshoot?

Every spring, Tulip fields across the world burst into color, creating one of the most breathtaking spring spectacles in the world! If you’re fortunate enough to live near a tulip field, you should definitely consider hiring a photographer for a photoshoot among the tulips!

  • Tulip fields are only in bloom for a short time each year, making this a rare and special opportunity!

    • Last year (2024), I photographed two tulip sessions (dates March 15th and March 21st) and was going to do a third (March 25th), but Underwood Family Farms closed their tulip field the day before our session was scheduled!

    • This year I’m making sure to set up my sessions early in the season so I can get as many families and couples in front of my camera for this beautiful spring display!

  • Tulip sessions are also perfect for any occasion!

    • They’re perfect for engagement sessions, family sessions (hi dads, a photo album from this session would be a perfect mother’s day present!!!), and a maternity session/pregnancy announcement.

  • Because tulips only bloom for a short period in the spring, a photoshoot in a tulip field is a memorable experience you’ll be able to tell your friends and family about for years!

    • A tulip field session isn’t just about the photos—it’s an experience. Walking through rows of flowers, feeling the fresh air, and simply enjoying the beauty of the season make it a session you’ll always remember.

A young family of four walks hand in hand through a vibrant tulip field. The mother, wearing a light blue floral dress, holds her daughter's hand, while the father, dressed in a white shirt and dark trousers, holds their toddler son's hand.

Ideas to Enhance your Tulip Photoshoot

A digitally painted romantic scene of a couple enjoying a picnic in a tulip field at sunset. The man, dressed in a light-colored suit, and the woman, wearing a flowing white gown, sit on a soft blanket surrounded by vibrant pink tulips.

A Tulip field is already perfect on it’s own. You don’t necessarily need to bring accessories or props, however, why wouldn’t you? Props and accessories are a fun way to enhance your images. Here are a few of my favorite props and accessories to enhance your Tulip Photoshoot:

1. Tulip Photoshoot Ideas - Bring Picnic Props

While I don’t recommend bringing food, champagne, or anything like that to a tulip field (the owners might not like that!) you can bring a cute picnic basket and blanket to set up among the rows and get some cute, cuddly pictures with you and your loved ones.

  • If you visit Underwood Family Farms, in Moorpark CA, for your Tulip Photoshoot, it is a pick your own farm, so you can absolutely pick (and pay for) your tulips and add them to your picnic basket!

2. Tulip Photoshoot Ideas - Props & Accessories for the Tulips

While I’m not the biggest fan of bold, large and an in charge props, you can incorporate tulips and other props inspired by nature in delicate, subtle ways!

Tulip Photoshoot Ideas for a Rainy Day

A digitally painted romantic scene of a couple standing in a tulip field during a rain shower. The man, dressed in a suit, gently holds the woman’s arms as they stand close under a transparent umbrella.

Most tulip fields in Southern California close when it rains, but if you visit a Tulip Field that’s still open despite the rain, don’t let it ruin your photoshoot! There’s still so much fun to be had!

  • Play with Transparent or Pastel Umbrellas

    • A clear umbrella keeps the focus on you while allowing the vibrant tulips to shine through. For a pop of color, go for pastel umbrellas that compliment the flowers beautifully.

  • Wear a Stylish Raincoat & Boots

    • Lean into the rain with super cute (and practical) outerwear! A chic trench coat, neutral rain boots, or even a cozy sweater can create a charming, romantic vibe.

  • Lean into the artistic nature of water

    • Rainy days bring a different kind of beauty—soft, overcast light, muted tones, and a poetic, nostalgic mood. If you love fine-art or editorial-style photography, a rainy tulip session is perfect for achieving this aesthetic.

Ways to enjoy your Images after your Tulip Photoshoot

As a photographer, the last thing I want is for the beautiful images I take of you and your loved ones to get stuck in the digital realm and never make it past Facebook or Instagram! Here are some ways you can enjoy your Tulip Photoshoot images afterwards! (Again, dads, perfect Mother’s Day present!!!)

1. A Seasonal Photo Album

The print lab I work with creates custom, heirloom quality albums that are meant to last for generations to come! They offer albums in a beautiful array of covers, including spring colors!

  • Invest in a photo album you can put out on your coffee table every spring so you and your loved ones can look back fondly on your day among the Tulips.

2. Custom Wall Art

I work with another print lab that specializes in museum grade print paper and custom frames. It’s the perfect way to display your memories!

  • Create a custom gallery wall of your tulip photos so you’re reminded of your love every time you walk through your home!

3. Heirloom Print box or Holiday Cards

If you don’t want a full album or wall art, the print labs I work with also offer beautiful cotton rag prints that can be kept in a decorative display box so you and your loved ones can flip through them whenever you want!

Or, you can get custom Holiday cards printed out and share them with your extended family and close friends!

Three elegant, custom-designed photo albums with soft suede covers in neutral tones—beige, ivory, and taupe—are displayed on a light gray surface.
A modern dining room with a wooden table and chairs, featuring two framed family portraits on the wall. The portraits showcase a family in a tulip field, dressed in light pastel colors.
