The 4th of July is right around the corner, and there’s no better place to celebrate than right here in Malibu!

From the absolutely gorgeous (fog free) beach days, to the spectacular fireworks shows at night, Malibu 4th of July isn’t something you’re going to want to miss!

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through where to see the best firework shows, what to do during the day (and how to navigate PCH so you’re not stuck in endless beach traffic), the best places to eat, and local entertainment!

Are Fireworks Legal in Malibu, CA?

Long story short, it all depends on whether or not the city gets a Firework Permit.

Back in 2023, the city of Malibu did not get a permit, so there were no fireworks within city limits. And if you’re thinking about bringing in illegal fireworks, don’t. If you’re caught, you can face up to $1,000 in fines and up to a year in prison.

You can check the Los Angeles Fire Department’s website to find out if there are going to be firework displays in Malibu. Professional Firework shows in LA County will be announced starting June 27th, 2025.

Best Places to View Fireworks in Malibu

If the city of Malibu ever brings back permitted fireworks in the future, there are a few incredible spots that would offer unforgettable views of the show.

Zuma Beach is one of the most popular and spacious places to watch fireworks light up the sky, especially if you're looking for a wide, unobstructed view over the ocean.

For a more elevated vantage point, Malibu Bluffs Park provides a scenic overlook where you can see the coastline and any nearby displays.

And for those who prefer to dine while they watch, beachfront restaurants like The Sunset, Paradise Cove Cafe, or Malibu Farm Restaurant would offer the perfect setting to enjoy dinner with a sparkling oceanfront view.

Until then, we’ll be soaking up all the summer vibes Malibu has to offer, no fireworks needed.

Fun Malibu 4th of July Activities, That Don’t Require Fireworks

Visit the Beach

One of the best ways to celebrate Independence Day in Malibu is by heading straight to the beach.

Whether you choose Zuma, Surfrider, or El Matador, Malibu’s coastline offers plenty of room for a beach picnic, sandcastle building, and spontaneous family fun. Arrive early to snag a good spot—these beaches fill up fast on holidays—and bring along your beach chairs, umbrellas, and a cooler full of snacks.

The best part? You don’t need an elaborate plan. Let the kids splash in the waves while you unwind with a good book or take a stroll along the shore.

Listen to Live Music

Celebrate the 4th of July weekend in Malibu by catching a live show at the Trancas Country Market Summer Nights concert series. Held every Friday from 6pm-9pm all summer long, this free outdoor concert is the perfect way to unwind. Bring a blanket, let the kids run around, and enjoy live music with a scenic Malibu backdrop as the sun sets.

Before, during. or after the show, grab a drink or a bite at nearby favorites like Malibu Brewing Company, known for its craft beer and coastal menu, or Kristy’s Village Café, both conveniently located right next to the concert lawn. Whether you're sipping a cold pint or enjoying dinner under the stars, this local tradition makes for a relaxed and festive 4th of July evening.

Picnic at the Park

For those of you who want to skip out on the beach madness, but still want to enjoy Malibu, pack a festive picnic and head to one of Malibu’s scenic parks for a laid-back 4th of July outing.

Malibu Bluffs Park, perched above the Pacific at PCH and Malibu Canyon Road, offers playgrounds, picnic tables, baseball and soccer fields want to spread out and enjoy ocean breezes. Keep the kids entertained with a game or two on the grassy fields while you settle in for a peaceful lunch overlooking the coast.

Trancas Canyon Park is another great option, with shaded picnic shelters, tables, restrooms, and plenty of space for dogs and kids to roam.

And for a full-on nature experience, consider Malibu Creek State Park just a short drive away—it features accessible picnic areas with water and BBQs near hiking trails and creekside spots, giving you both a delicious meal and an afternoon of exploration. These parks make for stress-free, family-friendly Independence Day celebrations with a splash of outdoor charm.

Beachside Dining

If you want to fully enjoy your Independence Day with a classic coastal meal, head on over to Paradise Cove Beach Café, where your table practically touches the sand. Think seafood tacos, cocktails, and the soothing rhythm of ocean waves. From here, you can enjoy front-row views of fireworks reflecting off the water without leaving your seat.

Just down the coast, The Sunset Restaurant, perched right on Zuma Beach, offers expansive ocean views through open windows, perfect for sipping a chilled glass of wine while fireworks light up the night sky .

For something a bit more upscale, Nobu Malibu delivers a sophisticated beachfront experience. Its sleek, modern dining room overlooks the Pacific, and if you time it right and reserve well in advance, you can catch fireworks while enjoying top-tier sushi.

Meanwhile, on Malibu Pier, Malibu Farm Restaurant combines farm-to-table fare with stunning sunset views—and from its waterfront tables, the Independence Day fireworks make the perfect finishing touch to a fresh and festive meal.
