When is Tulip Season in California?

Late February - Early March

Tulips are an early blooming flower with a short bloom period.

Underwood family farm anticipates their tulips will be in bloom mid February.

Thankfully, all of the gardens/farms listed above are super knowledgeable about their blooms, and can tell you if the tulips are in bloom before you go!

Tips to Enhance your Experience at Tulip Farms

1. What to Wear

  • Colors: Bright, cheerful hues that complement tulips (yellows, reds, purples, greens) or neutrals like beige, white, and pastels.

  • Comfortable Shoes: Opt for closed-toe shoes or boots, as tulip fields may be muddy.

  • Layers: Southern California weather can shift—light cardigans or jackets are ideal.

  • Patterns: Florals, gingham, or polka dots can add to the farm vibe.

2. Avoid Crowds

  • Best Days: Aim for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, as they are typically less busy than Mondays (post-weekend visitors) or Fridays (pre-weekend visitors).

  • Morning Advantage: Arriving as soon as the garden or park opens ensures you can enjoy the blossoms in peace and have unobstructed photo opportunities.

  • Early Mornings: Arrive before 9:00 AM for soft, golden light, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds. This is also ideal for photography and peaceful walks.

  • Evening Visits: Some places like Descanso Gardens or Huntington Library may have extended hours. Visiting an hour before closing provides a tranquil setting as most visitors leave.

3. Book a Photoshoot

Tulips only bloom for a few weeks, so why not try to get a photoshoot among the delicate flowers while they last!

Many tulip farms offer photography packages or allow you to bring your own photographer. Booking a session during the golden hours—within 2 hours after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset—ensures the softest, most flattering light for your photos.

Coordinate your wardrobe with the photographer’s guidance to make the most of the stunning tulip backdrop. Whether it’s family portraits, maternity shoots, or couple sessions, a professional photoshoot is the perfect way to preserve your tulip farm memories.
