Being a single mom is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. You are a true superwoman, donning the role of both parents all by yourself. Therefore, you deserve a special treat for yourself and the little one around whom your world revolves. And what better way to honor that than with a photo session?

When planning such special and empowering shoots, capturing candid moments is everything. Recently, I had the honor of portraying Katie and her son Atlas at Malibu Creek State Park. Katie is a single mom, and her two-year-old is a pure soul, sweetheart. We had a great time during this wonderful session, and inspired by the experience, I decided to include a few essential tips below!

1~ Wardrobe Ideas for Single Mom Family Pictures

When it comes to outfits, consider you and your child’s comfort. If you don’t feel comfortable in your clothes, that will show in the photos! So, opt for breathable and comfortable fabrics such as cotton or linen in warm weather. For example, in this shoot, Katie is wearing a flowy white dress, and her son wears a light and breathable outfit. In this way, you will both feel good, resulting in more relaxed and natural poses.

  • There are many places such as Morning Lavender, Ivy City Co., Nothing Fits But, etc. that have matching Mommy and Me outfits.

  • For boy moms, opt for complimentary rather than matching. As a boy mom myself, I know how difficult it can be to match outfits with your little fella.

Tip: soft and breathable materials tend to drape beautifully and create an effortless look in the photos.

2~ Posing Ideas for Single Mom Family Pictures

Here are my favorite poses for all single mom family picture ideas.

  • How about gentle kisses on the cheeks of your little one? Or forehead? It doesn't matter where; just enjoy the candid moment of expressing love and sweetness.

  • Wrapping your arms around your little one or pulling them close is another one that I love. It talks about warmth, love, intimacy, and guidance. Plus, it works well when sitting and even when standing.

  • Tummy-to-tummy posing is a sure way to create intimate portraits between you and your child. Keep your face visible, and don’t bury it behind your loved one.

3~ Props for Single Mom Family Pictures

When choosing props for the sessions, consider the aesthetic of the prop and if it fits with your vision for your session. For this shoot, I brought baby's breath, a blanket, a basket, and sunflowers. I also love encouraging my clients to bring beautiful garden hats, baskets, and perhaps a bonnet if we’re somewhere where there’s flowers or fruit. For beach sessions, a blanket, an umbrella, and neutral colored sand toys would work beautifully.

4~ Importance of Capturing Family Pictures as a Single Mom

As moms, we are usually the family's memory keepers. Whether it is the milestone moments or anything in between, we document our little ones too often. But how often do we get in front of the lens? Not usually. It's the same reason I encourage other moms to embrace motherhood and capture timeless memories with their little ones.

If you are worried that you don’t know how to pose, let go of that thought. I encourage all of my beautiful moms to engage and develop connections instead of posing to pull off more natural and candid photos. After all, what is more beautiful than genuine emotions and creating visual memories that will last for decades to come?

Hope you loved my single mom family picture ideas! Whether you hire a professional photographer to document your bond every year or do it yourself, be sure to actually show up in the pictures with your children. Because even if daily challenges make you feel exhausted, trust me, you are beautiful. You are loving, caring, and hardworking, and I promise these photos will become your most priceless keepsakes.
